Reconstruction of Kaunas Sports Hall to the Multi-purpose Events Centre.
The object being reconstructed – Kaunas Sports Hall is part of Kaunas Azuolynas complex of sports facilities. This complex is situated in the historical part Kaunas Zaliakalnis district (unique code 31280), which has its cultural value formed from urban, philotopic, economic, architectural and historical values. In 2007 the complex of S. Darius and S. Girenas sports centre facilities was included in the Register of Cultural Property and is presently a state protected object.
Some facts about the complex: the hall was constructed in 1939 for the European basketball championship. In 1962 the hall has undergone reconstruction: reinforced concrete tribunes were constructed, the thermal insulation of walls was enhanced, thermal insulation of the roof was applied, and heating system was installed. The building, upgraded during the soviet years, is little used now. Among the events, which took place at the hall are: European and World qualifying handball games, European Under-18 Championship, traditional international dancesport competitions “Gintarine pora”, “Rudens taure”, folk band festivals “Grok, Jurgeli!”, circus, concerts and many other events. When Kaunas “Zalgiris” arena was constructed in 2011, the Sports Hall lost its importance, events are scarce, therefore a new vision is necessary on how to use it for city community needs.
The goal of the work is to adapt Kaunas Sports Hall to a Multi-purpose Events Centre. Priority – conference and science innovation centre, possibly a museum of achievements of science. The project should take into account the valuable features of the cultural heritage object: special composition, floor planning, architectural solution of façades, structures, however non-standard solutions are also possible in order to adapt the building to new function. It is possible to use a common urban concept with other works, planned in this territory. Authors of the work are free to establish the scope, programme and scenario of activities of reconstruction.
Physical demand program for this task is free to choose by the author’s decision – you can decide on yourself what size, program and scenario building it should be. But have in mind the case study situation. Consider it fair to look for standards from relevant literature or similar objects.
