Reconstruction of Darius and Girenas Stadium in Kaunas to 25 000 Places Multipurpose Stadium
The object being reconstructed – Kaunas Sports Hall is part of Kaunas Azuolynas complex of sports facilities. This complex is situated in the historical part Kaunas Zaliakalnis district (unique code 31280), which has its cultural value formed from urban, philotopic, economic, architectural and historical values. In 2007 the complex of S. Darius and S. Girenas sports centre facilities was included in the Register of Cultural Property and is presently state protected object.
Some facts about the complex: Kaunas Sports Hall was constructed in 1939. In 1962 the hall has undergone reconstruction: reinforced concrete tribunes were constructed, the thermal insulation of walls was enhanced, thermal insulation of the roof was applied, and heating system was installed. In autumn of 1969 the works of reconstruction of the stadium have begun: plastic seats were installed (9180 places). In august of 1979 the low wooden tribunes were replaced with reinforced concrete ones, surrounding the green field in a semi-circle. 12 thousand seats are installed in two levels. The stadium tracks were shortened from 500 m to standard length. In 1998, the running tracks of the stadium and the sectors were reconstructed, new modern pavement was installed, measuring equipment and devices have been acquired, the tribunes were repaired and repainted. The 18th European Athletics Junior Championships took place in the stadium in 2005 following the requirements of EAA. As art of preparations the stadium pavement was updated, a new video panel was installed, new fields for warm-up and throwers were installed.
Goal of the project: reconstruction of the stadium into a modern universal stadium with 30 000 seats, maintaining football as priority. A common urban concept with other projects in this territory can be used. The project should take into account the valuable features of the cultural heritage object: special composition – the oval form plan, the organic tie to the Azuolynas Park.
